Ocala Regional Medical Center

Ocala Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is a 222 bed medical center and a verified Level II Trauma Center that will serve as the primary teaching site for this program. Dr. Ettore Crimi and affiliated faculty will oversee all resident rotations, electives, and research at ORMC. Dr. Crimi will coordinate and communicate with the Site Directors regarding ORMC residents rotating at any of the sites included in the Anesthesiology program: West Marion Community Hospital (Integrated Site - Ocala, FL), North Florida Regional Medical Center (Integrated Site - Gainesville, FL), Osceola Regional Medical Center (Integrated site – Kissimmee, FL.), and Nemours Children’s Hospital (Orlando, FL). The program has all of the required medical and surgical specialties as well as support services to make teaching and learning at this site ideal. State of the art equipment and a diverse patient population will allow residents to gain clinical experience to ultimately practice independently.

West Marion Community Hospital

West Marion Community Hospital is a 138-bed sister hospital to the program's primary training location (Ocala Regional Medical Center). West Marion Community Hospital opened in 2002 to meet the healthcare needs of the growing population of West Marion County featuring all private rooms and offers a full-service Emergency Department and Quick Care, as well as Marion County’s only inpatient Joint Care Center. Medical services include general surgery, bariatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, radiological services and a variety of outpatient services. The educational experience at this site will include faculty supervision appropriate to the PGY-level to which they precept. The volume and variety of procedures available for the residents to assist with are a compliment to the primary training site location, allowing the residents beneficial experience to additional varied procedures.

North Florida Regional Medical Center

North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) is a 445-bed, full-service medical and surgical acute care center serving North Central Florida and offering comprehensive cardiovascular care, oncology, orthopedics, neurosciences, minimally-invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery, weight loss surgery, wound therapy and many other services. NFRMC is fully accredited, is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Quality Top Performer by The Joint Commission, is an accredited Chest Pain Center, is designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, Spine Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, and earned a position in Truven Health's Top 100 Hospitals in 2017. NFRMC is the ideal choice as an integrated training site for anesthesiology residency training.

Case variety and volumes guarantee excellent clinical experience. While at NFRMC, residents will be supervised by board-certified teaching faculty at a level appropriate to the PGY-level, and as determined by the program director in conjunction with the supervising faculty's observation/assessment.

Osceola Regional Medical Center

Osceola Regional Medical Center is a Joint Commission accredited 404-bed hospital that builds on a proud tradition of healthcare excellence in Osceola County, Florida. Nemours Children’s Hospital - Orlando

Nemours Children’s Hospital is a 100-bed pediatric hospital. The Anesthesiology and Pain Management Department is composed of an outstanding faculty that has trained and practiced in the most prestigious children’s hospital in the country. All faculty members are board certified in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology. The Anesthesiology Department has four highly respected divisions that provide diversity of clinical and educational offerings. These divisions are general pediatric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, pediatric sedation and pediatric acute and chronic pain. The Anesthesiology Department is the first department to complete training in TeamSTEPPS National safety program, has outstanding outcomes and is very engaged in leading clinical and pediatric pain research. Many of the Faculty are frequent presenters at national and international scientific meetings.

Educational Program

Includes:

First Month Orientation

  • Lectures: During the course of the first two weeks, residents will have introductory lectures covering topics in anesthesia such as the room setup and machine check, pre-operative encounter, induction and intubation, patient positioning, common medications, and emergency. Additional lectures will cover topics regarding resident wellness and research principles and evidence-based medicine.
  • Simulation: During the course of the first two weeks, residents will have simulation sessions covering topics such as the anesthesia machine and room setup, pre-operative encounter, induction and intubation, intraoperative event management, emergency and recovery.
  • Clinical Experience: residents will work one on one with the attending assuming more and more responsibility throughout orientation.
  • OSCE assessment: at the end of orientation residents will complete a simulation based OSCE assessment.

Research

The Research model is based on a “Public Health” approach, focusing on the whole admission/procedure/post-procedure care and will be supported by the wealth of resources of the HCA system. Outcomes-related research will be emphasized both in the in-patient area and in the clinics.
