Ocala Health September 28, 2015

With the goal of keeping seniors safe on the roads, Ocala Health will hold a CarFit session on Thursday, October 15, 2015, from 9 am to 1
pm at West Marion Medical Plaza, 4600 SW 46th Court, Ocala. CarFit is an innovative program designed to give a quick comprehensive check
on how well an older driver and their vehicle work together, and provides motorists with community traffic safety resources intended to keep them driving safely longer.

Trained CarFit volunteers will complete a 12-point checklist with each driver. Among the items checked: Is the person positioned correctly in the driver's seat? Can the person reach the pedals easily? Does the person know how to adjust mirrors properly or have the flexibility to use the mirrors? Staff members from Ocala Health's Senior Wellness Community Center, Ocala Regional Medical Center's Trauma Services, and STRIVE! Physical Therapy will be among the trained volunteers performing the assessments.

The driver will also consult with an occupational therapist who, if needed, will discuss ways to maintain and improve aspects related to driving health. The therapists may also provide information about local community resources on exercise, nutrition and other programs to help keep them safe on the road.

The CarFit program was created by the San Francisco-based American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American
Automobile Association), AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
